The air in Beijing is still ridiculuously polluted. It is meant to be at maximum 50 m per m but there's 160 m per m. The reason China got it was because it said it would decrease the pollution.
I wanted to know what is going to be done about it, in such short time? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/28/2008 10:04PM by Olive. No need to do anything more fake, let the real China to be present to the whole world, all at a strike, everyone knows what the real china looks like. That makes no sense, bu at the moment beijing is extremely polluted. You can see it as it leaves everything looking misty. What so that scientific machinary telling people about the air in beijing is wrong, and the american team coming in smog masks is just them being silly. Wearing smog masks might seem overdone and silly, but after a day's sojourn on Beijing streets, I wouldn't be surprised when they get back to their hotel rooms and clean their noses out to find crusty / viscous snot that's green and brown. Why do you think the locals also wear the masks.
Another thing to watch out for is frequent and prolonged exposure of rain on the scalp / skin. With all the pollutants mixed in the rainwater, it can't be good for the scalp / skin and is said to possibly cause hair to fall out, i.e., to cause blotchy (bald) spots. So it is a good idea to shower as soon as possible. Maybe some people are more sensitive than others. Of course this isn't scientific, but applied common sense. Hey Tiber you think only Beijing have air pollution ??!!? All big city in world have air pollution. London have air pollution too Yarik, Beijing has too high an air polution. It is higher then UN standards on health. It is so bad satiarists are making jokes about it. Still, you have to start somewhere. and compared to the last few years beijing's air has never been this good as it is now.
i'm not saying that pollution here isn't a huge problem. and I can even understand if some athletes don't want to come. But what do you except? I don't think that when beijing recieved the allowance to host the olympic games people really believed that they would be able to reduce it as to reach the european standards within 4 years... don't even think it would have been theoretically possible. and its not like they didn't have any serious air pollution in europe either. and even they needed what? at least 10 years to get rid of it. Ha haaaaaa, Tiber, it's me again. I don't know if anyone has studied this little fact, but being me, I just had to bring it to your worthy attention !!! several billion TONS of methane gas are pumped into the atmosphere annually... "WAHHHHHHHHH" I hear you cry.. "who is this vast polluter of my atmosphere...?" the answer to this question is CATTLE ( which come in varying sizes, shapes, etc All animals, in fact, that eat vegetation FART THIS QUANTITY OF METHANE (between them)into the atmospere annually.... what should we do with these "farters"??? their contribution to 'global warming'.. 'ozone layer'.. not to mention my health, is surely something that should be stopped?? Give the world a few good examples of how we can stop these 'Olymic gold medal farters', and you will go down in history as the saviour of the planet.. Yeah, that actually came out on the news here ages ago, but it is not cows that are casuing the pollution in beijing now. The fact is, beijing is ridiculously polluted, more so then the good old london haze. But at least it is better then before. Shame about the chinese track runner by the way.
O by the way, you lot type in mock the week olympics in to you tube., funny as anything block you ass, or you'll get hurt. ![]() Even local Beijingers are concerned about the pollution that is getting worse and worse. Beijing can never be polluted like this before. When I was child, I didn't see sand storm at all. Now, the city has been changed from tradional hutong, siheyuan to glassy concrete that seems to be modern but not suitable for living any more. ....Beijing, pain in my dream. Whenever I went back to Beijing, I must get sick for a couple of days, either fever, or food sickness. Beijing is not that polluted like other Chinese cities. I think it is okay and it is not that bad like some of you said. Anyway, different person, different opinions Errr...its not an opinion, there is a standard of health in air polution set by the UN. Beijing air is bad for your health. 我看到我们的政府在努力改变这种状况,我们看得到。 In fact I think Beijing air has gotten MUCH better this year, since the Olympics, of course that pollution has just been moved to another city.... but it's good for those of us in Beijing! haha Still it's not good but I see blue skies sometimes, like today! It does still get bad some days but I agree it's much better than before, even much better than Nanjing was. come here and see by youself. Yesterday and today are good examples of bad air in Beijing. It's sunny so you'd think it's be blue sky but it's just a dull shade of grey. But definitely better than two years ago. When I was there in 2002 and 2006 I didn't think it was that bad...but it did look awfully hazy at times lol. I will admit I seen the blue sky more in Wuhan and Shanghai more often though lol. I'm told the last couple years Wuhan has been getting lots worse... its tagged as one of the new cities for construction and money. It was being built up when I was there in 06....I wonder what it looks like now. 3 years in China is a long time when talking about how fast they build their cities... Probably quite different now. LOL yeah there was a difference in Beijing between 02 and 06. I'm possibly going back to China at the end of this year, we will have to see though...and I probably will be in Shanghai the whole time though... beijing's air pollution is a big problem, can not resolve in a few time!
