What's the best way to learn Mandarin?

I plan to take two years of Mandarin at a community college. Then, I'm not sure. How do you learn Mandarin completely?

My parents send me and my brother back to Taiwan every other summer, and our Chinese extremely improves each time. The best way would be to live in an evironment where the surrounding people spoke only Chinese...If anything, look up Chinese dramas with subtitles that you can download from Veoh or wherever, and just watch them over and over again. Just like people learn English faster and better by watching children's cartoons, you should try watching Chinese cartoons and anime! XD It definitely works.

Move to a small city in China and talk a lot. Simple.

I think the best way is to talk with them as a baby

step 1:you can't understand and can't speak ,just listen and one word is good for you.

step 2: The part word come to a sequence and you can know some about it. congrutulation and don't give up.

step 3:you can know most of it and can speak, you can talking with native speaker and improve it.

step 4:you are a native speaker。

I am a native speaker and would like to teach you ,,,,,,,, haha.........

I took Chinese in high school and it was very smooth and clear for me.
In college the paste is faster and you don't really learn how to write the characters but rather read the characters. The teach doesn't spend enough time nurturing the student because it's college.

The only way to learn chinese faster is by practicing the language. I learn English and Chinese by watching their drama. I too talk English and Chinese with my friends, which really helps me to learn fast.

One thing that is the most important is, your courage in learning the language. If you are really want to learn Mandarin and you have strong courage, you can actually learn it in 3 months just like a friend of mine do.

If you're just getting started, the best way is to get personal attention from a teacher. You can save a lot of time and money if you have a teacher who can not only explain concepts to you, but also knows how to help you correct your mistakes.

Just finding a native speaker isn't the same -- knowing a language/subject doesn't automatically qualify someone to teach it. That's not to say that practicing with them isn't helpful, but if you really want to "learn Mandarin completely", you should find a teacher with experience and a system to help you.

If you can't find someone qualified in your area or want to learn from home, you can learn Chinese online with GuavaTalk. They have trained teachers and Chinese conversation classes to help you learn to speak well.

If you do have friends who are native speakers, try to set up times to practice chatting with them regularly.

Good luck! Hope that helps!

I don't think Chinese is so difficult because I use it everyday. And some of my foreigner friends also learn Chinese very quickly. They start to study Chinese only one year ,but we can communicate very well in Chinese now just because they live with us and they need to speak in Chinese everyday.I thought English is very difficult but now I realise that English is not so difficult just I need to use it more often. So if anyone wanna practise your Chinese or have any questions about Chinese ,you can contact me and I would be more than happy to help you because I can also improve my English. You can install MSN to contact me,My MSN is xiangxue3@tom.com. If you travell to Beijing or live in Beijing, maybe we can chat with each other face by face.

Going to China will help for sure. First so a semester of Chinese to get your base of the language. You need the base to get you started. Then you can start following Karis's advise and more. Their cheap DVDs will make it easy to access dramas and movies in Chinese (Movies work! If it wasn't true how come everyone in this world knows words like "HI!" and "FUCK YOU!"). In fact you can watch Hollywood movies translated into Chinese! Usually learning Chinese at a college you will see a lot of Japanese and Koreans there. Go make freinds with them as its easier than local Chinese. Most likely they can't speak good English, so you know Chinese will be used. You can practice Chinese while having a hair cut with the hairdresser, have a chat with the person massaging your feet while you try a foot massage.

This one is optional but it has gotten a lot of guys speaking Chinese fluently! Go to bars and meet those bar girls. They might just want your money but you want their time to practice Chinese with you. Basically like a tutor. Tutor, Escort, Bar girl, Hooker same thing! You pay them money to spend time with you to practice your Chinese!

And if you are that dedicated! Go read a Chinese Newspaper and translate it everyday!

Also try to make outings with the teacher. Making the teacher a friend will help a lot and you can also keep in contact for future help. If she's hot you can actually try and date the teacher. Yeah I know plenty of students dating the teacher! Plenty of practice with their Chinese, I mean they have to since their girlfriend is their Chinese teacher.

hahahaha, interesting. and it works sometime if your teacher is a girl and she is available smiling smiley :x0
well, go to school is a good idea. and as far as i know,if you focus on language, no need 2 years.if you wanna private tutor or partner, make sure not for short time but regularly and long term.
emmm, pinyin first and character next, be patient to the pinyin.smiling smiley

I started out the typical way: audio CDs, grammar books and practising characters until they came my nose out. Then I consulted the I Ching that told me to eat 12 tangerines a day. I followed this advice and even though i don't spend more than a few minutes a day studying, my command of Mandarin has improved tremendously. As a byproduct, i haven't had any bouts of scurvy either.

You can do what I did. Major in Mandarin in University. (Actually my major was East Asian Studies). Then go to China or Taiwan and make friends with people who are not very good and don't care to learn English. You'll learn much faster that way. Good luck!

Study with Chinese teacher in the beginning. So finding a good Chinese program on campus is really important!
Then find a good tool, such as Chinese electronic translator or other learning software to improve yourself at home.

In addition, Watching a lot of Chinese drama is also a helpful hobby.

Good tool for reference

You can first learn some Pinyin. It is the basis to sttudy Chinese. Then I recommend you to find a professional tutor.

Chinese@Home's One-on-one Online Teaching (LiveClass™) is an innovative system which combines traditional one-on-one tutorial teaching methods with the latest advances in computerized education techniques.

Our curriculum is flexible and will fit in with your schedule! Time differences are not a barrier to learning with us, and you can learn Chinese whenever it’s convenient.

Here's a relatively long post on how to learn Chinese.

It suggests a (free) first steps audio program, ongoing audio podcasts, learning to use a dictionary, getting a language partner, etc.

The best way is to buy Chinese magazines and newspapers on differnet topics, translate and learn new words and whole texts (it works really). And find Chinese friends and discuss new topics using new words with them!!! It works!!! That's the way I got Chinese, now I can speak it absolutely fluently!!
