try to make outings with the teacher. Making
> the teacher a friend will help a lot and you can
> also keep in contact for future help. If she's
> hot you can actually try and date the teacher.
> Yeah I know plenty of students dating the teacher!
> Plenty of practice with their Chinese, I mean
> they have to since their girlfriend is their
> Chinese teacher.

hahahaha, interesting. and it works sometime if your teacher is a girl and she is available smiling smiley :x0
well, go to school is a good idea. and as far as i know,if you focus on language, no need 2 years.if you wanna private tutor or partner, make sure not for short time but regularly and long term.
emmm, pinyin first and character next, be patient to the pinyin.

哈哈! I taught physics in University. Every year when Einstein's Relativity comes along, some students become VERY friendly with me. So I set a rule, anyone who wanted to go for outings must qualify as a rocket scientist.

If you have opportunity to come to China, so come here and try to communicate with native Chinese.

If you have no chance to come here, so I suggest you ask an Chinese tutor and watch Chinese movie, listen Chinese song......

I am native Chinese from Shanghai, I don't mind if you contact me for practicing Chinese.

Learning Chinese is not like learning other languages .Writing and reading are important as talking and listening. The basics are very difficult. Here is a good website to start with [90325ymow6ex847pebl8uhhrft.hop.clickbank.net]

Best way to learn Chinese is to learn the tone system first and foremost. If you do not use the 4 tones , you cannot be understood. The best way is with a good teacher who can actually get you to understand the tones and how to do them. Westerners just do not hear them naturally and do not reproduce them naturally either. The best teacher is someone who is really fluent in both languages and understands how to create a bridge between the two. If you are studying on your own, the most systematic tone teaching materials I have encountered are the Michel Thomas Method: Speak Mandarin Chinese. It starts out very slowly, but it actually gets you to absorb the system. Good luck on learning Chinese.

I like to use flashcards. It works really great. I do it on my iPhone. There is a lot of applications, but few of them support Mandarin.
I am using xCards for iPhone. They provide a lot of websets and you can have them in Mandarin. Sometimes translations aren't great, but acceptable. Anyway it's a best way for me by now.
