Is it normal for Chinese people to laugh at a fat person if they see one? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/18/2010 02:10AM by Olive. Depends on the Chinese person. China is becoming just as fat as the West, it's no longer like it once was.
However it IS much more common to comment on fatness and to use the word fat, in the West we have all sorts of euphemisms we are suppose to use. When I was in China and Japan I was often smiled or laughed at, by many many people each day and even sometimes Asian people in the UK will often snigger about me. I'm wondering if it is because of a difference in bodyshape? I'm half black/white and I have an hourglass figure so even though I am quite large I carry no weight on my face and little on the upper parts of my body but I have a MASSIVE bum (even in UK) and legs. I did notice that people in China seemed more curious about me and it was more about being rude towards me in Japan. I don't feel I am ugly and I don't have dark skin so I don't get this attitude towards me. Chinese men often approach me online and I found this so funny but some Chinese people told me I am pretty from the neck up and have beautiful eyes and also some things that are not very nice like Japanese guys perving on me so I am really confused haha and a little worried about an upcoming trip to South East Asia in June as it really was quite upsetting. One other thing, I did lose a lot of weight but I was still too big to find new clothes so I was walking around in clothes that were about 2 sizes too big (but I did manage to find tops in H&M in Harajuku that fit woo hoo!) and I have a lot of tattoos, 7 in total and 3 of which could be related to Asian culture haha but I hate them now so they are mostly covered up. I did notice there was less laughing when I was wearing a jacket but it was still going on and I normally cover my tattoos when I'm in the UK. I can handle being stared at but being laughed at 200 or 300 times a day is really bad
I am similar to this lady. It could be many things. I'm sure there are some asses who might laugh but who knows for sure. it might weight or skin colour or tattoos or they are nong ming... best to just ignore them. Shareenpoohs, if you do love like the lady in the picture, you are a really hot girl. I have to admit, I have a low tolerance for obese people... but not in a hateful manner. Every time I see an obese person, I wonder to myself, how can a person eat so much? Does he or she not look in the mirror or check their weight? If it's a medical condition, I can understand. But I have friends who just pig out and does not care about their body weight at all. Yeah, I always think if I pass 200 lbs I'll just stop eating. I got close recently so I've started exercising and eating healthier. I don't know how people who are Huge can be ok with it, not only is it not so attractive but incredibly bad for their health... i don't think chinese people will laugh at fat guys. oh, btw, i recommend you guys a kind of diet tea named wu yi tea. It is said to be the most powerful fat burner among all kinds of teas. Thanks Melbguy I think it's got to the stage where it's ok to be fat in England, no one thinks twice and we're like 4 years behind America in terms of our obesity problem which is terrible, what the hell is happening! I think there saying the average clothes size in UK is like an 18 now (which I think is size 38) When it comes to me I'm a big boredom eater but I'm on a diet now (lost about 8 kg) and last time when I was away I just had no interest in eating was just too hot and too excited haha. I lost about 10 kg in a month in China, I don't think I would be fat if I lived in Asia, there's too much pressure to be thin. Astroboy I totally agree with you, mostly people are eating too much or just eating the wrong foods and then just sitting home watching tv. Some people are addicted to eating or use it to deal with their emotions as well. Haha I just met this cute Chinese guy online...I guess it won't work out ![]() Edited 1 time(s). ------------------------------------------------------- > Is it normal for Chinese people to laugh at a fat > person if they see one? for sure yes. Make sure you get fit before you come over. Tatoos japan..no...no...you will get stared at and scare the little old ladies. I know some Japanese guys have them and many foreginers like me do too but i alway keep covered. As u know tatoos are linked to yakuza (gangsters) in Japan. Not many overweight people in Japan, few yes with macD, KFC but still few Japanese food is low in fat and healthy.
China is getting fat without doubt, it seems they never stop eating. I had work colleage from UK come Shanghai he must be around 160kg and not tall chinese were staring and sniggering, but he use to it he knows he is a big guy. Chinese nation will get fatter it appears it is acceptable there fat means wealth and money i guess. Had cousin come Shanghai also a big guy chinese girls loved him. different culture different views on body shape and size. Indian's loves the hour glass figure as many men do not the skinny boney things you see on cat walks, they just love themselves. no, i think health is the most important things. fat people might drink some pu er tea to weight loss. it really does work^_^ Exercise works better. Is the asian culture more accepting of fat people? not at all, actually they don't think nicknamed fat people and make fun of them in public is bad.they probably would call you fatty directly if you are fat,and they think it's nothing bad but very intimate. The Asian culture used to have very few fat people so they tend to treat those who are fat as something funny and, as Kurt said, will directly call a person fat. However it will depend on your age and sex, younger people will not be accepted so well but older fat males are fine as there is lots of older fat Chinese males, once they make money and buy a car people tend to get fatter so no one cares so much. In China fatness can, to some extent, represent rich. In the West we've skewed our food production so badly that fatness is more a poor person's illness now. i think it might be culturally acceptable these days to see round person. Yeah it's becoming much more common here now with fast food and cars becoming so popular. no chinese i like fat ppl, i wanna be fat, that's is a little dream of mine!! If u go to Vietnam, maybe 1 out of 20 people is fat. In China, maybe 1/10.
In the west, 8/10 are fat. Highly over exagerated as always but yeah, West is very fat. We're a very lazy culture that eats too large of portions. add to that the junk food culture Chinese people laugh at anything they don't like or things they haven't seen before. They even will laugh at people who are too skinny. Laugh at black people going OMG that person's skin is so dark! Do you think Chinese people are eating too much Western fast food such as McDonalds and KFC. Generally the Chinese nation is a slim society but that's begginging to change. Yeah, it's already changing very fast, look at the younger generations, I taught kids in Nanjing and usually almost half of them were fat and it only gets worse as they get older. And it's not all food problem, it's also cars, TV, video games and parents who want to spoil and protect them so they buy them any food they want and never let them run around and have fun... As societies modernize they tend to get fat... Fast food itself don't really make people fat. There are skinny people that do eat Mcdonalds occasionally. Over eating and not maintaining metabolism really does it. A skinny person entering Mcdonalds usually eats a supersize meal for dinner. A fat person will be found to have eaten at least 2 supersize meals!
And I'm not too sure about the whole slim society. In the past fat means rich. And the older generation always like to see their children get fatter. "OH look you've gotten fatter!" is the compliment stating that you look healthier! Uberche Wrote:

It's not a thing of culture, east asia were very poor area(china, korea, vietnam, you name it.japan might is a exception)they had fought with famine for relatively a long time.they were long for high calorie food much more than now they want.how could they been fat when they were suffering famine? by the way,I find japanese cuisine is real low calorie. ------------------------------------------------------- > by the way,I find japanese cuisine is real low > calorie. No not really. Its just that occasionally people that eat Japanese tend to be more caring about their health. But there are a lot of unhealthy foods like Cup noodles and Tempura. Plenty of street food like Taiwan with all the squidballs, snacks and desserts. Tons of potato chips, choclates, cakes, ice cream, donuts etc. Japanese snacks do sell like Pretz/Pocky sticks (the most famous Japanese snack), Calbee. The notorious Cup Noodles where so many have copied but still Nissin Cup Noodles reigns terror where some people just eat cup noodles for their dinner! Tempuras, breaded meats like breaded pork, Teppenyaki, Yaki Niku, Shabu Shabu, Steaks on a hot plate can all be quite unhealthy depending on what you order. The high end stuff like Toro and Kobe beef is actually very fatty, its not lean mean. Don't forget the culture of Sumo! If Japan has no calories to take in I'm pretty sure Sumo will be extinct with no one being able to get fatter. Anyways the healthy ways of eating Japanese food tend to be mainly seafood. As great as it is for health it is bad for the sea environment. Japanese really are vacuuming the sea to extinction. And it is starting with Blue Fin Tuna. And because its like inevitable certain seafood are going extinct. I'm going to eat as much of those seafood as I can. So selfishly human of me yah?! HAHA! Not forgetting the Japanese are the #1 killer of dolphins - using a cruel method of clubbing them to death. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
