I went to Shanghai for 8-day's travel from Oct 1st to 8th. It's the first time I have been in Shanghai. Never in my life have I seen so many foreigners in China. I have just chatted with foreigners in flesh two times, so I don't have any confidence to say "hello" to an American, "bonjour" to a Frenchman or "Здравствуйте" to a Russian beauty.

This afternoon, on my way back to one of my relative's home, I heard a foreigner walking behind me speak to his friends "There are so many people here in Shanghai, this will never gonna happen in Swiss". At that moment, I wanted to have a little chat with him and talk with him about the "overload population problem" in China. But I did not do that cos I lost my confidence at that time.

Btw, I've found it strange that very few Chinese people in Shanghai would go to talk to a foreigner. Is the foreigners in Shanghai so cold that Chinese people dare not to chat with them or is the number of foreigners in Shanghai (more than 120000) so large that native Shanghai people regard it as normal.

Yup it's the norm. 10 to 20 years back and they would have been staring at your faces all day.

Chinese don't dare to talk to foreigners anywhere in China. They are shy, nervous or think their English is bad. I've been in China 6 years and very few Chinese have talked to me face to face without an introduction first.

why do you wanna talk to them? practising your english kinda wasting their time. making friends with them sounds impossible. coz you can't know each other well though a short talk, and you may live and work in totally different place. or maybe he or she is just a visitor, don't stay long in china.

They reason why I want to chat with them is"Grass looks greener on the other side of the fence".There are few foreigners in my hometown.._ _!...maybe you can call me"乡巴佬"...............I chatted with a foreigner yesterday on the secend Pearl of oriental pearl tower 261 meters above the sea level.I didn't have any problem chatting with her.she is humourous and easy to talk with.She taught me how to correctly pronounce "au revoir"and we shared with each sth about our hometowns.Our conversation nearly lasted for half an hour.At last,we waved"ciao"and"au revoir"to each...

Uberche....you are the 老江湖of ch-tools.com...your posts can be seen everywhere @ ch-tool.com(no offence)...yes ,you're absolutely right...it's not because we are cold that we don't talk to foreigners..It's because we are nervous and shy....we wanna seek every opportunity but dare not to catch those chances.....I met several russian guys when I was in Qingdao for a tour,they told me that they felt lonely in China..Not a single Chinese would come over to chat with them..they felt it's weird....I think Chinese should feel free to chat with foreigners...like a song's name"why can't we be friends",right?

Not sure what that means so no offense taken And yeah, people just need to relax and chat and have fun. No problem if they are only here for a little while, still have time to practice English and share some cultural things.
