I am hoping to go next year with my family. I have roots there in southern china (fukianese). When is the best time of year to go that is not too hot? I understand the summers are hot there.

It is pretty much the same as here (at least Northern part of China). All the people that I know in Beijing tell me that I need to go there in the fall, as it has the best weather. Spring there is too much sand, Summer is too hot (Average day 35C) and Winter is not all that nice.
I enjoyed it while I was there in May, but there was some sand still around, and it was getting hot.
I also lived in Tianjin during the fall, and it was very pleasent.

have never been in china before, but really want to go there as i have a chance. i am just googling to see the perfect time to go to china, as it has four seasons. here's what i got. from June to August it is summer, March to May is spring (April and May is the best time to watch flowers in China), September to November is autumn, December to February is winter. so i think i'm going to go there in spring, autumn or even summer. i am sun lovers lol.
