I was there in October 2007, and that was the best travel of my life !
Dali was very nice, esp. the old city center. The three pagoadas are also in a very nice area. Be carefull of the white spiders who build their nets between trees when you get there (my girlfriend stole my clothes to cover her head). Traditional clothes from the Dai are beautifull. If you wanna act like Indiana Jones, you can try the local resurant and go away from the tursists one. The food was killed in the mountain on the very same day, you'll just point what you wanna eat from the baskets spread on the street, and they'll cook it for you. For the breakfast, there are people selling cold noodles in the streets. They'll prepare it quickly, will add many sauces and some nuts. then you just eat in the street, between two old houses with kids who probably never saw any white hairy face (like mine) and look at you with big eyes ! Lijiang was just great, with this white mountain you can see in the background from everywhere. The old city is very nice with all its small river. You feel like being in the middle age lost somewhere in another world. On the evning, there's a Naxi (local minority) band playing some of their traditional songs for 30 minutes on the square. Kunming is not so interesting, except a temple near the lake, and another golden one. But the stone forest in Shilin is amazing. I don't know (yet) other places in Yunnan, but that's a very great memory for my girldfriend and I ! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/20/2009 05:00AM by Bluesratapoil. yeah, definitely was my favourite trip in China so far (though I haven't made it to Tibet or out west yet). Agree that Blues that Kunming wasn't all that exciting (nice city but just another big city the same as all Chinese big cities) but Dali is my favourite place in China by far and Shangrila was absolutely breath taking! LiJiang I liked but was just too many people for me to enjoy it completely.
XiShuangBaNa or whatever it's called is the other place there I REALLY want to go. Next time... Re: Has anyone travelled to Yunnan?

I agree with uberche... I also want to go back to Yunnan to discover Xishuangbanna as well as Shangrila or the Lugu lake. My own "breathtaking" place was the mountain not far from Lijiang (forgot its name). Being at 4600m with that wondefull sky without any cloud, this pure snow everywhere, high was amazing. Being there without using any oxygen was (maybe) what brought me such great sensations. yes!! i have chana.
i am in dali . do u like to meet me and become good friends. Has any of you been to the east coast as well?
I am planning for my trip to China in Dec. I need to figure out a route from Shanghai to H.K. for 2 weeks. I am debating whether I should fly straight from Shanghai to Yunnan and fly to H.K. OR go along the east coast from Shanghai south. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Yunnan with diversity in culture and landscape but am concern about the cold weather and the triangular route, which does not seem to make a lot of sense. I am not sure about the places along the east coast between Shanghai and H.K. as they seem to be wealthier and modernized. I’m originally from H.K. and currently reside in a big city. Any advice?
