Chinese beauty standards

Chinese people have pretty much different standards of beauty. While in the west attractiveness is a complicated and subjective matter, in China, the physical attributes considered important are well established. Some common standards of beauty for Chinese people are really white skin, absence of moles and freckles, oval face and slimness. Another important difference is that in the west people normally have different opinions about beauty standards, the concept of attractiveness in the west varies from person to person. While some people like short girls, others prefer tall ones, some people like freckles others don't, some consider moles sexy... after all, would Cindy Crawford be Cindy Crawford if she didn't have that mole? In China the standard is just one and almost everyone agrees with it. om

Yes, that is true. But isn't this a bad thing? Chinese guys give great weights to the practical (bodily in this case) attributes when choosing a girlfriend and wife. The same holds for Chinese girls who have preferences over practical matters like nationality, family background, wealth, job, etc. of their potential boyfriend or husband. So,love has been giving way to practical matters when it comes to establishing a serious relationship in this culture. What a shame. That reminds me of the mating in the animal world: muscles is what only matters. The two situations are very similar in that practicality counts in choosing a partner.

It's just different culture. I think people should respect cultures of other coutries, just like they respect their own cultures.Of course you don't need to like it or follow it.

I do not agree with Anna and Gd. Yes, we should show understanding and respect toward alien cultures, but that does not mean we should admit they are GOOD if they are not. We should help people of a culture aware of what is wrong with their culture for possible changes if they want to. In this way, a culture can evolve toward better.

Sometimes we can't use "good" or "bad" to judge an alien culture. Like you said, understanding and respect is the best way to treat it

Like they say beauty lies in the eye of the beholder...
