I'm a 20 year old uni student currently learning Chinese in my free time. mainly i'm learning the spoken part in classes, as well as the written/reading, but i'd like to improve my reading and writing.

IMHO, the best way to learn about writing is to imitate some good works. At first try to decide a subject by yourself - not too difficult, and then try to write it, if you cannot write down something, you could find a similar article and copy it. Gradually, you will find you can write something on your own.
No matter writing or reading, they have the Chinese character as the base- that is the most important thing.
