This is probably one of the leading factors why I leave China in my teen. As I am a radical person, I don’t like to follow what mainstream medias told us. I love questioning.

Hey, I live in a place where Hong Kong TV station is available, I grow up watching GI Joe, “fight for freedom”.haha… so yes I was polluted by American pop culture when I was really really young, let’s say 6 years old.

I mean, come on, every medias in the western countries have obligation to give critics to government. Being a president or Prime Minister, or government themselves, have to have ability to listen a different view.

良药苦口，利于病,　忠言逆耳，利于行。

Chinese should all understand this quote eh?

Then again, it does not mean it’s totally freedom here in west too, you have to be careful what you put on facebook, otherwise your employer or business might sue your ass off.

What if someone who was your minority in your home town raped a Han girl (not you, you had nothing to do with it) and after the Police said there wasn't enoguh evidence to convict them so the other Han in your city beat you to death... Imagine what your friend's reaction would be... Maybe protests? violence? riots? Just a thought...

Stop making China the center of such events. Everyone knows if you do something to honour China like the Berlin book festival tried to do they will become pushy, insulting and controlling so stop making things to honour them. If China wants to be that way, let them go back to being a closed border country incapable of feeding it's people.

China needs to learn proper manners in dealing with other countries but it's still a very young country, it will learn as it gets strong. Or it'll cause a war. Either way things will get solved...

China looks to export censorship By Michael Bristow - BBC News, Beijing - 2 November 2009
A few days before the start of this year's Melbourne International Film Festival its executive director received an "audacious" telephone call. An official from China's consulate in the city called him to "urge" the festival to withdraw a film about the Chinese activist Rebiya Kadeer. Beijing then tried to persuade the organisers of the Frankfurt Book Fair not to allow two Chinese writers to attend an event.

China says it does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. But some see these acts as an attempt by China to use abroad the tough censorship measures it constantly employs at home.
Sadly best and brightest in China doesn't mean much anywhere else, so not hard to keep the "best" and brightest of China in China.

The problem in this regard is China's poor education system, one which is not free, even though the government is quite well off financially speaking. Many farmers still can't afford to send their children to public schools. The best and brightest often are not even getting an education.

Than there is the poor state of Chinese education in general. Corruption often makes it possible for students to buy their grades, via cheating, or bribes, and low teacher wages create teachers who don't care if students do cheat. Add to that a skin flint government which doesn't invest nearly enough in education, and you end up with a lot of under educated people with college degrees.

Quality education is clearly not a priority in China at the moment. This puzzles me, seeing as the Chinese Government spent 40 billion "American" dollars on the Olympics, more than any other country in history. Had they funneled this money into education, think of what they could have done. Now look at Western countries, who are the real innovators of the world. They may be in debt, but only because they subcontract most of their work to under developed countries, and built too many nukes during the arms race, their financial shortfalls are not because of investing in education.

America, Britain, these are the countries that make and invent more or less everything the rest of the world takes for granted.

If only the Chinese followed the example set by the west and invested as much in education, maybe they could become innovators as well. This would require more than just good education though, it would also require a level of free and outside the box thinking that the Chinese, with their current hive mentality, have yet to achieve.

It's sad to see a country so flush with cash misusing it. Education should be their number one priority, instead it is quite low on the list. Until it's made a priority, China's "best and brightest" won't stack up to the best and brightest produced by the education systems in Western countries, nor will China ever become a world leader until this happens.

As long as the main priority in China is things like passing off 14 year old gymnasts as 16 year old's, and making a quick buck, China's best and brightest won't mean a hill of beans in the world arena, that's for certain.

Umm, clearly the death penalty for corrupt officials in China doesn't work, as China is the most corrupt country in the world. People go into police work here because they expect the bribes and other creature comforts. If it doesn't work, don't do it.

People always think they are more clever than the system, and they don't think about being punished or getting caught, if they did they would never commit these crimes. In truth these crimes are only punished when made public, or some government venture fails because of a corrupt official, otherwise it's business as usual.

People who think enacting these tough policies in America would work are fooling themselves, as the death penalty has proven to be zero deterrent to Murder, why would it work in regards to stealing?

It's a form of punishment, not a deterrent, this much is obvious. It sends a message, that people don't listen to. No one ever thinks it will happen to them, profit and gain are what concern the person benefiting, not punishment, as they think it won't ever happen to them. No, the death penalty doesn't work, if it did there would be no corruption, or a hell of a lot less, in China, and yet it's the most corrupt government in the world. If one goes by simple result driven logic, it has little if any effect. Maybe it would be worse if there were no death penalty, however America has no death penalty, and there is a hell of a lot less corruption there, so clearly it doesn't work to deter people.

AIG, the economic collapse, this was not people breaking laws, but being stupid, which is not punishable by death, or in any way. This corrupt Chinese official stole outright and accepted millions in bribes, totally different story.

Compare different countries and their laws, as well as their crime rates, and level of governmental corruption, and you'll see what works and doesn't, death penalty, doesn't do a damn thing but make victims feel better, it's no cure for the problem though, that's for sure.

Brian99,

I agree with your last post.

China will not make any strides in political freedom, unless it reaches a certain level of development. This level of development would entail a substantial proportion of China's population earning middle class wages and sharing at least a high school education.

Having said that, China still has a long way to go, despite those who believe China should sacrifice attending to its own domestic problems, in order help the current Global Financial Crisis. Furthermore, it behooves China to ensure that its best and its brightest people stay within their country to ensure its economic development.

Indeed, Bush was a moron, who got elected because of his namesake, and a wish to return to Regan era economics and policies. Politics in America has become nothing more than a family business, with other bushes wanting to run for office. They are not the only families who's names are so interlaced with politics though that their names alone get them elected. Politics in America is a joke if you ask me.

Obama got elected because people were so fed up with Bush they wanted the most radical change possible, thinking things would have to get a great deal better. Mediocre won't get that done.

Can't really blame them though, I mean look at the alternative, Maccain was so out of control and unable to control his emotions it's funny. Even would he have made a good President, he was a lousy orator, which is all people care about these days. Also, fear of Sarah Palin possibly becoming the Pres ruined any chance he had. Whoever made the choice to have her be Vice Pres should be put in the Guiness Book of world records for dumbest idea ever. No one cares who the visa president will be, as long as it's a he, and he is old and wrinkly.

Also, lets be real, Obama is half black, had he had lips the size of a tuba, skin black as pitch, and had the accent of a black guy from Philly, He'd have never been elected president.

I disagree with the Chinese poster about the Dalai Lama, mans done a lot of good work, and the Chinese people have in large part been brain washed about the whole Tibet affair, big surprise there. However, giving it to Obama, what the hell has he done to win a Nobel prize, he's no mother Terasa that's for sure.

Truth is China won't become a democracy anytime soon. why? Money, they have more money than God right now, and will for some time. People look at the Soviet Union, thinking that, because it happened there, it will happen in China as well. That's just not the case, as the Soviet Union effectively went bankrupt and collapsed, no such risk in China at this time.

China will remain a communist state because of money. They have a lot of it, and the guys who are in charge of that doe also are in charge of the country. As long as they have enough of a cash surplus to grease palms and effectively run the country, there will be no civil unrest, and no collapse.

Some day, when most people are middle or upper class, and 3/4 of the people are not farmers worrying about where their next meal will come form, then they will start to care about politics and freedom, that is not the case at the moment, maybe in 50 years, but not anytime soon, that's for sure.

I have to agree, what exactly has the guy done, except become president and be black?

The Nobel peace prize seems more a popularity prize, it seems to be more fluff than actual substance. The guy has done nothing to promote any real lasting peace anywhere. The whole speel about why he got it, just made up BS, even sounds fabricated and flimsy.

This guy is mediocre at best as president, and the only reason people won't say so is because they voted for the guy, and don't want to be made to seem like fools because they have been yammering about how he will change things. Peoples pride is more important to them than admitting they were wrong. Of course because they can't do this they will further reinforce their warped reasoning and decision making, by electing this guy again for a second term, just like they did George Bush.

Nobel peace prize my ass, this guy is overwhelmed and under whelming as President, he deserves the booby prize instead.
