The grammar explanations in PCR leave a lot to be desired, however. (They're terse to a fault; obviously intended to be fleshed out by a teacher.) This book matches the first two books of PCR, lesson by lesson, and supplements them by giving clear, detailed explanations of the grammar points brought up. GAMSAT preparation | GAMSAT

How to learn grammar is an artistic work. As most Chinese English learners, I’ve learnt a lot of English grammars in the past 10 years, but can’t speak even a simple sentence after ten years of hard working.
Two years ago ,I was lucky enough to become a Chinese teacher. I teach Chinese to foreigners in a beautiful place called yangshuo , where together with my colleagues in Omeida Chinese Academy http://www.omeida.com.cn/, we discover that the best way to learn grammar is to learn it in a practical way , not just memorizing the rules and always trying to find the logic of a foreign language. To learn a foreign language, the most important thing is “How” not “Why” , once you learn a new word ,what you need to do is to find out how to use this word in a sentence ,but not always ask why this word is formed in this way. Just like you can’t explain many things in your mother language but you can also speak them in a correct way, you can’t judge other language in your own mind.
Normally, my foreign students who learn Chinese since a totally beginner can communicate with us in Chinese in one mouth, and past HSK level 2 in two months , past HSK 3 in three to four mouths. In order to prove my method of learning grammar, I started to learn French and Spanish two months ago. Today I would like to show you my way to learn grammar, take learning Chinese as an example.
The basic Chinese sentence structure is: subject+ time +location +verb+ others .
Example :
1.你今年在欧美达中文学校学习汉语。 nǐ jīn nián zài ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào xué xí hàn yǔ 。
2.你昨天晚上在西街喝咖啡。nǐ zuó tiān wǎn shang zài xī jiē hē kā fēi 。
3.他下个月去阳朔旅游。tā xià gè yuè qù yáng shuò lǚ yóu 。
4.她妈妈明天去桂林买衣服。tā mā mā míng tiān qù guì lín mǎi yī fú 。

Of course you can make thousands of simple but useful sentences with this rule. But be sure your content is useful, don’t make sentence as “ 我每天在教室飞来飞去。wǒ měi tiān zài jiào shì fēi lái fēi qù 。”
Now we come to the questions. How can you change a statement in to a question? Here I want o show you a simple way.
As you know ,there are two kinds of questions in English. One is called general question which means you can answer by “yes or no “. If you want to change a statement in to a general question, what you only need to do is to add a “吗” at the end. For example ,the above sentences should be :

1.你今年在欧美达中文学校学习汉语吗？nǐ jīn nián zài ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào xué xí hàn yǔ ma?
2.你昨天晚上在西街喝咖啡吗？nǐ zuó tiān wǎn shang zài xī jiē hē kā fēi ma ?
3.他下个月去阳朔旅游吗？tā xià gè yuè qù yáng shuò lǚ yóu ma ?
4.她妈妈明天去桂林买衣服吗？tā mā ma míng tiān qù guì lín mǎi yī fú ma ?

Another kind of question is called special question, which means you must answer it by a specific thing but not “yes or no “. In English we have “what , who, when” ,here are the translations :

English Chinese
What 什么 shén me
When 什么时候 shén me shí hou
who 谁 shuí
where 哪里nǎ lǐ

To make special question is also very easy ，what you need to do is to keep the structure replace the specific thing by the above question words, for example:

你今年在欧美达中文学校学习汉语。nǐ jīn nián zài ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào xué xí hàn yǔ 。

Now I underline 你 nǐ which means 你 nǐ should be absent in the question , so we should replace 你nǐ by a question word.你nǐis a person so we should choose who to be the question word, 谁shuí is who in Chinese . so the question should be 谁今年在欧美达中文学校学习汉语？shuí jīn nián zài ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào xué xí hàn yǔ ? And don’t forget to write a question mark at the end.

你今年在欧美达中文学校学习汉语。 nǐ jīn nián zài ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào xué xí hàn yǔ 。

This time I underline 今年jīn nián ,the same way ,今年jīn nián is a time ,so I should choose 什么时候shén me shí hou to be the question word ,so the question should be 你什么时候在欧美达中文学校学习汉语？nǐ shén me shí hou zài ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào xué xí hàn yǔ ?

Of course if I underline 欧美达中文学校ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào ，then the question should be 你今年在哪里学习汉语？nǐ jīn nián zài nǎ lǐ xué xí hàn yǔ ? if I underline 汉语hàn yǔ ，then the question should be 你今年在欧美达中文书院学习什么？nǐ jīn nián zài ōu měi dá zhōng wén xué xiào xué xí shén me ?

See , Chinese is very easy if you learn it in a correct way . For “why and how “, there is another rule I may teach you next time .Now try to change the left sentences in this way ,see you next time .:)-D
