Best way to learn Chinese is to learn the tone system first and foremost. If you do not use the 4 tones , you cannot be understood. The best way is with a good teacher who can actually get you to understand the tones and how to do them. Westerners just do not hear them naturally and do not reproduce them naturally either. The best teacher is someone who is really fluent in both languages and understands how to create a bridge between the two. If you are studying on your own, the most systematic tone teaching materials I have encountered are the Michel Thomas Method: Speak Mandarin Chinese. It starts out very slowly, but it actually gets you to absorb the system. Good luck on learning Chinese.

I started out the typical way: audio CDs, grammar books and practising characters until they came my nose out. Then I consulted the I Ching that told me to eat 12 tangerines a day. I followed this advice and even though i don't spend more than a few minutes a day studying, my command of Mandarin has improved tremendously. As a byproduct, i haven't had any bouts of scurvy either.

try to make outings with the teacher. Making

> Yeah I know plenty of students dating the teacher!
> Plenty of practice with their Chinese, I mean
> they have to since their girlfriend is their

hahahaha, interesting. and it works sometime if your teacher is a girl and she is available :) :x0
well, go to school is a good idea. and as far as i know,if you focus on language, no need 2 years.if you wanna private tutor or partner, make sure not for short time but regularly and long term.
emmm, pinyin first and character next, be patient to the pinyin.:)

Going to China will help for sure. First so a semester of Chinese to get your base of the language. You need the base to get you started. Then you can start following Karis's advise and more. Their cheap DVDs will make it easy to access dramas and movies in Chinese (Movies work! If it wasn't true how come everyone in this world knows words like "HI!" and "FUCK YOU!"). In fact you can watch Hollywood movies translated into Chinese! Usually learning Chinese at a college you will see a lot of Japanese and Koreans there. Go make freinds with them as its easier than local Chinese. Most likely they can't speak good English, so you know Chinese will be used. You can practice Chinese while having a hair cut with the hairdresser, have a chat with the person massaging your feet while you try a foot massage.

This one is optional but it has gotten a lot of guys speaking Chinese fluently! Go to bars and meet those bar girls. They might just want your money but you want their time to practice Chinese with you. Basically like a tutor. Tutor, Escort, Bar girl, Hooker same thing! You pay them money to spend time with you to practice your Chinese!

And if you are that dedicated! Go read a Chinese Newspaper and translate it everyday!

Also try to make outings with the teacher. Making the teacher a friend will help a lot and you can also keep in contact for future help. If she's hot you can actually try and date the teacher. Yeah I know plenty of students dating the teacher! Plenty of practice with their Chinese, I mean they have to since their girlfriend is their Chinese teacher.

If you're just getting started, the best way is to get personal attention from a teacher. You can save a lot of time and money if you have a teacher who can not only explain concepts to you, but also knows how to help you correct your mistakes.

Just finding a native speaker isn't the same -- knowing a language/subject doesn't automatically qualify someone to teach it. That's not to say that practicing with them isn't helpful, but if you really want to "learn Mandarin completely", you should find a teacher with experience and a system to help you.

If you can't find someone qualified in your area or want to learn from home, you can learn Chinese online with GuavaTalk. They have trained teachers and Chinese conversation classes to help you learn to speak well.

If you do have friends who are native speakers, try to set up times to practice chatting with them regularly.

Good luck! Hope that helps!
