Hi Sole,
I would like to make you some suggestions from my personal experience in China that I hope you find useful.
The problem of studying in rural China or a small town, is that there is a few (or null) numbers of English speaking Chinese or westerns. This is not a problem if you speak Chinese or if you are going with a friend in order to hang out during your free time.
The first thing that you should take into account is Beijing’s official accent, which is the one they teach you when you learn Chinese at an institute or a university. In my own experience and other teachers at Aston have told me the same for other small towns they taught at, they have a different accent that is harder to understand (Ning Guo in my case) and even some local dialect that they mix with mandarin and make it impossible to understand. Not even the Chinese teacher that came with me could understand some of the things they said. This could be really frustrating when you try to practice what you have learned with the locals.

I also came to China looking to study Chinese outside a big metropolis. If you are interested in learning more about studying in Wuhu, you could read my post "Why you should consider learning Chinese in Wuhu, Anhui province.". I hope you found my comments useful and feel free to mail me at mariano.calabro@gmail.com if you need any further advice with this or any other aspects of your trip (visa, travel, weather, etc).

I would like to recommend you an affordable and excellent place to study Chinese. I am an Industrial Engineer; I arrived four months ago from Argentina to study Chinese at Aston Language Centre in Wuhu, Anhui province. They have an excellent group of teachers who have a university teaching degree with a specialization in “teaching Chinese to foreigners”. After only 4 months, I have a basic understanding (listening, speaking, reading and writing) of Chinese that allows me to travel and communicate easily in China which is essential if you are outside Shanghai and Beijing.

Benefits of studying in Wuhu:

•	The school fee is lower, only 60 rmb/hour (8.5 U$D/h) for private 1-1 lessons.
•	The cost of living is lower than in other provinces and almost one third of Shanghai and Beijing! Accommodation at Aston starts at 280 rmb/week (41.0 U$D/week) and the taxi starts at only 5 rmb (0.7 U$D) which is a fast and easy way of comparing the cost of living in different Chinese cities. Dinner at the best restaurant shouldn’t be more than 35 rmb (5 U$D); I usually eat for just 6 rmb (0.9 U$D).
•	You will improve faster, as you will need to use Chinese more often because there are fewer foreign and English speaking Chinese.
•	You will be overwhelmed by the friendliness shown by the local people, since they don’t often see foreigners.
•	It is safer than living in a metropolis.
•	It is close to lots of tourist attractions. The most important ones are, Shanghai (350 km), Hangzhou (280 km), Huängshan (250 km) , Jiuhuashan (100 km) , Suzhou (300 km), Nanjing (100 km) and Hefei (140 km).
•	You will experience the real Chinese culture unlike in the westernized metropolis like Beijing or Shanghai.
•	Wuhu’s accent is closer to Beijing’s official accent (unlike Shanghai) but with a nicer weather.

Although it is not a big metropolis, it is still a big city with plenty of Night Clubs (the best three are “Number One”, “1880” and “Soho”), bars, restaurants and KTV.

As there are many English native teachers (there are plenty of teaching positions at Aston) and international companies in Wuhu (e.g.: Siemens, SKF, Kawasaki) there are enough westerns settled here to go out with. This will help you adapt to the new culture until you have a basic understanding of the Chinese language. For the soccer fans like me, you even have the chance of joining our football team to play in the local football tournament.

If you feel this could be a good opportunity to study Chinese, teach English or you just need advice about living in China, contact me at astoneduenglish@gmail.com or at my personal email mariano.calabro@gmail.com. You may also visit the institute’s web page at www.astonedu.com in order to learn more about Wuhu.

Hey Sole- My favorite rural place in China is Yangshuo, the mountains and the river are just BEAUTIFUL! Plus you can do rock climbing and loads of biking and hiking. I studied Chinese there at a school called OMEIDA & my Chinese improved loads, it was useful for me that they were accommodating to my schedule - I was climbing too- and could arrange one-on-one lessons when needed. The school is famous in town; I'm sure when/if you are there people in the streets should be able to tell you where that is. Anyways dug their website & e-mail for you to check-

Hello everyone!
I thought I’d tried this site to get some info from people actually living in China.
I would love to study Mandarin in China; however I’d prefer to be in a small town rather than a huge, crowded city.
Maybe you have some info on Mandarin immersion programs outside the city, in rural China?
May be you can recommend some?
Thanks SO much!

Michaelbwx,

Thank you for the helpful advice. China is not the only place where I have taught. I hold an MFA in writing, an MA in English with heavy experience working with EFL/ESL students on the college level, A BA in English, and a BA in communications. I have fifteen years experience teaching middle school through college. This is on top of about thirteen years working in communications and corporate training. Teaching is not new to me.

I've worked in the private sector as well as in the public sector. I prefer the public sector in both China and in the U.S. largely because the academics come first and the money comes second. At this point in my life I am not money-motivated, though I do expect respect and courtesy from management. I did not receive either courtesy OR respect at Yangzhou College of Environment and Resources.

Public education is not the sole domain of bad management in either the U.S. or in China. Private education has its pitfalls.

If I wanted to teach in large cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, I'd apply to schools there. I grew up in large cities in the U.S., so large cities have little appeal to me.

Money is not a problem. I am paid well enough to not only surbvive but also to save.

What is truly disheartening is having to deal with so-called professionals (such as FAOs) who regard the foreign teacher as chattel. In many schools, the FAO does his/her best to scr*w the FTs and to create havoc at every turn. I have become tolerant of mangement styles. However, when an FAO willfully breaks the law, the FT should have recourse. My recent dealings with the SAFEA indicates that the FT really has no recourse. The SAFEA is much like an old, dead and bloated fish with no teeth. It is there, and no one can deny its existence, but it is basically useless.

I have recently learned that one of the foreign teachers ( a woman) had a non-traditional relationship with the FAO (also a woman). It was suggested to me that getting rid of me would help to ameliorate (if not totally hide) the fact that the FT was being paid twice the amount that she should have been paid. She was drawing a Ph.D's salary but she had a BA in drama. I found this out after i forced the FAO's hand after several weeks of unfair favoritism shown to the FT in question at the expense of the other FTs, and having to hear nonstop complaints of students who took her classes as well as mine. She was incompetent.

So there's more of the story. It was not a pleasant experience at all.

Dear Jasuk,

I accidentally came across Chinese-tools.com earlier, read your sarcastically rude reply to Steven's posting, and was motivated to register so I can let you know how incredibly insensitive and obnoxious you are. After briefly skimming through other postings and seeing your other replies to peoples' postings, I'm even more convinced that you enjoy being a Smart*** who's not smart enough to know how disrespectfully dumb you are.

I guess I'm dumb too for not being able to ignore your stupidity... Therefore, you must forgive my rudeness because you and I are just as reckless. :D:X>:D

Hello,

First of all, I am not a native speaker French. In fact I am, I live in Belgium (我是比利时人) and we have two official languages, 荷兰语和法语 but to be honest, French isn't my native language. Le français n'est pas ma langue maternelle. Néanmoins j'aimerais très bien vous aider à apprendre le français. And I can explain you English grammar as well. But most of all, I am very patient and I'm looking for someone to practise my Chinese.Je suis très patient et je veux pratiquer mon Mandarin... 我很喜欢练习中文。。。

So if you are interested - my English is 90%, mon français est aussi 90%, 我的汉语很坏啊 - you can send me a mail at 1247172449@qq.com or cjk391@hotmail.com

Yours sincerely,
Très agréablement,

If you'd like to teach in China seriously, you get a EFL certificate, and apply for a job through a good dealer such as ESEC.

Being a teacher doesn't make good money in most countries. So, don't expect too much if you become a teacher, or if you like being a teacher.

You can surely enjoy more if you can beocome a top manager in big cities such as Beijing or Shanghai. The question is: Are you lucky or qualitfied?
