Taipei will invite visitors to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo to enjoy the virtual experience of taking the high-speed elevator of the Taipei 101 Tower in its pavilion in the Urban Best Practices Area.Visitors will have a bird’s-eye view of both present and future sights of the city and feel the sensation of a high-speed ride to the top of the one of the world’s tallest buildings via virtual reality technology.

The Shanghai World Expo organizer yesterday handed over a 750-square-meter pavilion in the Puxi section of the Expo site to Taipei for its wireless-city and garbage-recycling system exhibitions.

The impressions of Taipei from the mainland are still the night market and Taipei Palace Museum, so the city will use the Expo as an opportunity to show tourists that the city had much more to offer, said Taipei Vice Mayor Lee Yong-Ping.

The pavilion is divided into several areas, including a huge three-dimensional theater where visitors can have a virtual tour of “tomorrow’s Taipei” via short movies and light-and-sound shows.

For its wireless-city exhibition, Taipei will show how it built up a wireless network that lets people attend to day-to-day tasks via the Internet.

I'd like to know what people in Shanghai think as well.

An Expo is less intrusive than an Olympics (anyone from Vancouver will be sure to tell you that these days!). Vancouver hosted the Expo in '86 and it opened up the city to the world. People were slow to get onboard at the beginning but as the party wore on everyone was into it. Wide consensus in Vancouver that it was money very well spent (and particularly for Li Ka Shing who picked up ALL the Expo lands for a song!).

Is all the construction in Shanghai because of the Expo? Probably not eh?

Build it and they will come seems to be the common theme for all of the expos. Japan's in 2005 was literally built out in the sticks -and out of sticks! (eco my ass! they cut down a forest!) The same pattern, slow to start, but no legacy at all.

I wonder if the local Shanghaiese are happy that Shanghai is not a permanet construction site and so much money is being spent in tidying up the place for the Expo 2010. New freeways being built, old chinese houses be replaced by apartment block, facelights off any buidling that can be seen from freeway, rebuilding pavements (makes easily for stupid scooter riders to ride than safer for people to walk on). It been constant nosie in the reconstruction of Shanghai i dread to think how much tax payers money has been spent, mine too as i pay tax in China !!!!
Will expo be a success?
With the financial crisis i not sure many people will travel just to see expo. I know businesses are cost cutting and not travelling unless really necessary we seem to do more video conferencing its cheaper.
Whats is the Shanghaiese view?

I surfed the internet casually the other day and found a very interesting website. It says Shanghai Expo 2010 is recruiting performs for the theme show which will start in May 2010 and end in October 2010. They are looking for dancers, theatre actors and actresses, singers, gymnasts and circus performers. Participants will have chance to perform with world-class performers and after the show they may get employed by well-known artistic troupes. I think it’s a great opportunity for students who major in performing arts. Performers will have free room and board; a monthly stipend of $500 to $800, tourist activities round China, and insurance is also covered. I recommend those who are interested to go to their website to have a look. The website is: http://www.rehoboth-edu.com/Creative/en/

Thanks for ticket info Ponpon. How about a single pass for the whole fair? I haven't seen it..

The Aichi (Nagoya) Expo'05 had that and I saved TONS of money. The site was HUGE! Even with planning, reading up, and over 20 visits including two pre-open media days, I still didn't see it all. Best is if you are working or volunteering there, as I see you are Ponpon (:P) There'll be something different going on every day. And unless you're there every day you're not going to know.

Shanghai is not really great for bicycles.. is it? I've been told it's illegal to ride in Pudong. Never seen any bikes there.. Is it true? It might be a good place, if I can ride that is.

It's going to be a blast! Just hope I can manage the time away from work. Anyone interested in doing a work swap, come teach kids in Osaka?

well, just finished online volunteer test~~

Seems the motto for expo volunteers is not that bad,世界在你眼前，我在你身边。hehehehehe.

for someone considering relocating for the Expo where would be the best place? ----Sunsetlover's words are right.because of the 2010 Expo construction, many places in shanghai have been in a mess.the freeway connects our university town and downtown shanghai has been turned off since months ago,it's said to turn on in next may~~bad news. so maybe you can consider relocating after Expo, hehehe~~if just for visiting, hotels nearby the Bund is the best choice.

What area would be the most convenient for travel to and from?
--shanghai's traffic on rush hour is horrible~~~but i think the government has some special measures for Expo, then downtown shanghai is the most convinent area without doubt.
What sort of longer term accommodation is suggested?
maybe rent a apartment~~

I could stay for 世博會 for about 10days, and then go around visiting businesses and sightsee for 20days, for a total of about a month.

I will need a local guide, basically to have relax and fun trip. Anyone know any locals that may be interested? I used to speak Mandarin, but I haven't spoken it for so long, I now speak broken Mandarin.

Shanghai, home of the world's largest bottle opener, the Shanghai World Financial Center!
-Show me the bottle of beer that it opens and I'll show you one happy panda!

I really want to like Shanghai but my experiences have been mixed.

Regardless, hoping for the best, for someone considering relocating for the Expo where would be the best place? What area would be the most convenient for travel to and from? What sort of longer term accommodation is suggested?

Thanks in advance everyone.

I just went there during my three week trip through China (I'm currently writing mini-articles and posting lots of pictures of gorgeous landscapes, cultural scenes, interesting food, etc at the Katacomb if anyone is interested. I'd so appreciate it if someone would drop me a comment if they check it out--I'm always looking to improve my writing!) and loved it. My parents met and dated in Shanghai, so it's always been a bit special to me. I am going to fight tooth and nail to make room in my schedule to return next year for the World Expo!

I was in Shanghai just 2 weeks ago...I love Shanghai, but because of the 2010 Expo construction, the area around The Bund is a mess! For visitors going there now you should know that the Bund promenade is closed. Also the traffic on The Bund creates dangers for pedestrians right now (little or no sidewalks). They should have closed up the whole area for the construction.

Having said that, I'll be back soon for business, and I'll plan to attend the Expo.

HI,friends

The 2010 World Expo will hold in Shanghai. How much do you know about the city?
I was born in the city, there are many foreigners working and living in Shanhai right now. I wonder that the foreigners in Shanghai could come to the WORLD EXPO.X(
