Vocabulary: Can you read English newspapers? Can I borrow your book? Conversation 1 : Can you read English newspapers?
Translation- Have you seen Little Wang?
- I’ve seen him. He’s over there, reading the newspaper.
- Can you understand (read with understanding) English newspapers?
- Some I understand and some I don’t understand.
- Can you understand (listen with understanding) English broadcast.
- Not yet (Now I still don't understand). If I study hard, I will certainly be able to understand.
Conversation 2 : Can I borrow your book?
Translation- Can you finish reading this book tomorrow?
- If I don't have too much homework, I can finish reading it.
- After reading it, could you lend it to me?
- Yes. Don't lose it, it can’t be bought now.
- Set your mind at ease. I won’t lose it. Are you coming in the afternoon?
- In the afternoon I have an appointment. Maybe I won't be able to come.
GrammarPotential complement with 得 and 不A potential complement is formed with the structural particle 得 (de) inserted between a verb an a resultative complement. The negative form is made by replacing 得 with 不 (bù).Examples:
- 我 看 得 懂 英文报。( I - read (do) understand - english newspaper : I can read english newspaper. )
- 我 听 不 懂 汉语。( I - listen (don't) understand - chinese : I don't understand chinese. )
- 我 买 得 到 这本辞典。( I - buy (do) achieve - this dictionary : I did buy this dictionary. )
- 我 来 不 了。( I - come (don't) be able : I can't come. )
别 : don't...别 means "don't" and it is placed before the verb.Examples:
- 别 丢 了。( Don't lose it )
- 别 买 这本书。( Don't buy this book )
- 别 听 他的话。( Don't listen to him )
