I just learned the etymology of 婦 (simplified 妇):

(fù, wife) = (nǚ, woman) + (zhǒu, broom)

A man's wife is a woman with a broom!

Chinese is very misogynous, but than so is English. Why do we say Guys when we see groups of people? Why is it Policeman? Salesman?

Most languages are misogynistic, though many places in the west are now trying to get rid of these words and put things like Police officer or sales person instead.

I think Chinese cannot really change so easily as with the characters things are very strict in their writing so probably even if China one day is not male dominated their language will almost certainly stay so.

Hehe, it doesn't matter how the character look like now, it is from tradition and history. But I think in China women have a really high status in the family compared to a lot of coutries. And the brooms now are in a lot of times carried by men in China :-D

It's definitely getting better but still a long way to go. Hopefully it keeps on getting better everywhere!

As a feminist, I am unhappy to see that. But I think the status of women today in China has changed greatly!

Yeah definitely, hope it continues! One day in my last school two girls invited me to go to the bar with them for the night to drink and dance and I said
"Oh you will go with your boyfriends?"
"No, we will go alone!" they replied
"But wont they be upset?!" I asked as most of my female students would never dream of going out to the bar without their boyfriends as so many Chinese guys are very Jealous.
"Probably" they replied "but with 40 Million more Chinese men than women if they want to break up that is their loss."

I was very shocked and actually quite happy to see women becoming much stronger and independent. Pity their boyfriends though... haha

Well, chinese words were transformed-just like Latin became English. LONG LONG ago, chinese words were actually pictures. Slowly, they became more 'civilised' and evolved into simpler words. But somewhere in between many words also became very complicated and difficult words. That's why nowadays we have Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
