Su Shi (1037-1101) was great man of letters and arts in the Northern Song Dynasty. His outstanding achievements in poetry, prose, calligraphy and painting had a strong influence on later generations. His verses are perfect experssions of vivacity and vigour in fresh styles. He was good at describing scenic spots with original rhetorics and revealing a philosophical idea from ordinary objects.

Su wrote this poem on the wall of the West Forest Monastery at the foot of the Lushan Mountain. Of all the works in praise of the Lushan scenery, his poem and Li Bai's "waterfall" are equally famous. In his poem,he did not bother to depict the details of the beautiful place, rather he tried to interest the readers with some philosophical thinking by giving his general impression of the Mountain.

The poem goes in the following lines: if you look at Lushan from the front angle, you would see a long mountain ridge; if you look at Lushan from a side angle, you would see a precipitous mountain peak; if you view the mountain as different distances, its height changes whenever you move. Why do you always fail to get an accurate and complete picture of Lushan? Because you are actually inside the Mountain and your vision is limited.

This theoretical idea not only applies to the observation of mountains but also to the observation of the rest of the world. A Chinese proverb says "Those closely involved cannot see as clearly as those outside." In order to get a correct picture of a subject, one has to study every aspect of it in an objective way. This is the message Su intended to send in his poem.
