People here do listen to Western Music but it's mostly all the candy pop Music like Britney Spears, BackStreet boys and other music that in the West is mostly for 13 year old girls...

The mainstream music scene in China is VERY boring and pretty much all the same style.

I should say most Chinese people don’t like western music. People in China listen to western music just for personal interests or for following pop music mainstream. Some like pop music such as backstreet boys, westlife, and some classical movie songs, “yesterday once more,” “my heart will go on”, “big big world”…. Some like country music,” take me home country road…” Some like rock /metal rock..

I ’m a big fan of western music. I touched western music from hign school. At that time, I listened to some songs love me two times, hotel California, every breath you take…… the only band I knew was Beatles. now, I have learned many bands and musicians. I prefer rock more than pop. it seems more effective in study and at work when listening to music.winking smiley

In fact most Chinese that I meet DO only know Pop... MJ as in Michael Jackson? He's the King of Pop music.
If you are in Shanghai or big cities maybe a couple students will know some other bands but by a large majority everything Chiense students listen to from the West is considered pop music.

Actually Linkin Park is here though, not sure why but it's one of the few Rock Bands that have made it big here. Blink 182 sometimes as well.

Rock Music is not really produced in China at this time except on the small independent circuits. The big cities have a couple of moderately famous bands like Carsick Cars, pk14 and Joyside (sadly they just broke up), but for the most part there is very little mainstream rock in China.

Technofoxai11792 speaking of singers, apart from techno, I like Kate Miller, Taylor Swift, Pink, etc, but I have to point out no Kenya West please. No offense to his fans but I personally dont like this guy due to his outburst at CMA.

My favorite band is Cascada.

Great songs come out from time to time lol. So its hard to tell which one is my fav. Recently I love evacuate the dance floor, last day on the earth, you belong with me, new divide, etc. In particular I like new divide a lot is partially because of transformers but also the song is really awesome!

All music is the same until you get used to it and can notice the differences. Especially if you don't listen to Rap you probably only ever hear the most mainstream crap, a lot of the less well known rap is better.

Jaspersue asked "so did americans watch chinese teleplay much?"

Well, I'm afraid not. I live in the US and we do have access to cable channels that program in Chinese; but I assume they are only requested by Chinese living in the US. We can also download music from just about everywhere but I'm afraid the general population just doesn't take advantage of that; it's truly a shame. I think there is beautiful music all over the world that we are not appreciating.

My girlfriend is from China so i am getting a wonderful education of your culture. I think your movies are amazing and your cuisine is far more complex than I had ever imagined. I admit that your traditional opera may be an acquired taste I haven't yet reached.

What Chinese artists would you recommend I start with? Thank you....

The answer is yes. Its all over the place. on the streets blaring out of store fronts, in the clubs, etc...dance music, rap music, R&B, rock, etc... many bars have chinese bands performing American songs.

With that said, Modern Chinese pop music is heavily influenced by American music to the point that if you took away the lyrics you couldn't tell the difference, without noting some chinese classical riffs blended in to the music occationally. The quality of some of this music is actually quite good.

On the other hand, there are many songs that are monotonous, cardboard, boring, "my little-pony style" songs.

I would disagree about the variety they seem to have the same 20 songs blaring out of every store...

The quality is ok because they just steal Western Singers songs and rewrite the lyrics, that's not something people should be proud of, it's called Copyright theft...

Re: Do people in China listen to American music?
Short answer: NO.

If you do hear western music, it would most likely be in the big cities.

Hi

I'm from the US but I've lived in Hong Kong for a while. I wouldn't say there is no American music at all, even though it definitely is not very common. Especially the Californian music style (The doors and Surf rock) was quite popular. However, maybe I was just hanging out in the "All American bars" ..
