about 2 year ago, i travelled to shanghai and a friend of mine ordered this tofu dish that was deep fried. it stinked like hell, but when i tasted it... heaven! specially with the sweet plum sauce.

can someone please tell be how to order this dish? i forgot what it was called. but in hookien it sounds like "tsao tau hu" or smelly tofu.

xie xie nin!

is this dish confined to a certain area of china or is it available through out the country?

Yarik: This is tofu 豆腐, or bean curd, and it is made of soy. You can find it in any Asian grocery store or possibly in the refrigerated section of your supermarket. It is more or less orderless and tasteless. You can read all about it here: Wikipedia: Tofu

However, "smelly tofu" looks like this when it's prepared and served. There are many varieties.

The smell is strongest when it is being cooked (and the wind can carry it a good distance around the neighborhood). I guess it smells like something bad burning or rotting. When it is served, the flavor actually is not so strong. You can read about it here: Wikipedia: Stinky Tofu

北京所谓的“臭豆腐”在拼子里不是叫豆腐卤吗?

It's hard to make good stinky tofu because you have to let it ferment. Best way would be to look for a Chinese shop and eat it fresh there.

Smelly Tofu: it's a popular snack in Changsha, which is black with very spicy tastes .
its Chinese name:臭豆腐(chou dou fu), I like this food very much.

Oh Christ no!! Mao Ji Dan is terrible. I would highly suggest you don't give it to your foreign friends to try... Chou Doufu is just bad smelling but MaoJiDan is a half grown baby bird in an egg.... that's just wrong.

It's really messed up... fully formed inside the egg basically... but dead.
