Was a good movie. Definitely VERY Nationalistic but than so are American movies so you can't really fault it for that.

IP MAN is the cantonese name. Its a Hong Kong movie. I watched the movie in Cantonese and Ip Man was the guy's name. And the OP already stated he was from Guangdong, which of course the used dialect there is cantonese.

it is not a translation but just a phonetic transcription

葉問 = 叶问 - Ye Wen (mandarin pinyin) = Yip Man (cantonese pinyin)
Well, it is the same, it is all Chinese

But the movie title in non Chinese languages is the Cantonese transcription : Ip Man

ah didn't know that... gotta say... I MUCH prefer Yewen to Yip Man... Either way a really good movie and great for practicing Chinese as it's pretty easy to follow and understand.

When I saw the name IP Man, I thought it is about technologist, but when I start watch it, I just understand what it is. The Yip Man is better than Ip Man.

People are arguing and discussing about IP Man vs. YE Wen. And yet not one person mentioned 詠春, "Ving Tsun". It's "Wing Chun" in Cantonese. "Ving Tsun" = Hakka dialect, etc... It's named after the person who created this form of Kung fu: a Chinese woman named 嚴詠春, Yim Wing-chun in Cantonese.
