These cartoon are printed by 撷芳主人, according to pictures of Ming empire.
He want to awaken yong chinese people to take our own dresses,which has been died out scince Qing empire occupied China.
So many foreigners believe Chinese would wear mandarin jacket or cheong-sam.
And chinese like to keep a plait.
But those didn't originate from han chinese.

What do you mean by "mandarin jacket"? Are those the padded jackets, in silk or cotton, worn by women? I have one in silk, bought in San Francisco Chinatown. It looks great and is very comfortable. When i was in Taiwan, i saw this woman wearing a stunning cotton jacket with embroidery on the back. It looked very expensive. When i make it to China, i hope to get a fancy one like that. Btw, what's the name for these jackets in Mandarin?

What this woman wears is called 棉袄 in Chinese.


In Qing period dressing style is very different from Ming period.
We take Ming's style as authentic Chinese dress,Qing's style is from the dress of the nomadic tribe in north china,add in some chinese element.

My jacket is the same style as the one in jade and gold on the second image. Interesting that it's called 马褂. These jackets are still quite common; yet 褂 is a character not much used, or so my dictionary told me. So, thanks to you i also picked up a new character today.

How about in return we'll help you with English, if you're interested in improving it? Besides, in these short sentences there's nothing wrong with your English at all.

I love my traditional jacket, though hard to find time to wear it unless I want people staring a lot...

Before I leave China (who knows when that will be though..) I'm going to go get some more traditional clothes made up (plus some Western suits, so cheap here and great workmanship on them!)

My favourite is the Qipao (not for me obviously) When tailor made it just looks absolutely stunning on a Chinese girl! Seen them on the Petite idealized girls here and full figured Chinese women and they always just look amazing.

i love qipao too. i have a nice one, short-sleeve to knee. but i seldom wear it because it's too hot to wear in summer. i like wearing it in rainy days. generaly, it's not so convenient to wear Qipao and i dislike to catch attention when walking in the street in Qipao.

Yeah definitely not for everyday wear, but on certain occasions it looks great!

One day I went with my friend (beautiful Chinese girl) to the main park in SuZhou. I wore my Chinese coat and my PLA hat (The old one, green with red star) and she wore a really beautiful Qipao, was really great and got some amazing pictures but sadly I lost all of those pictures when my hard drive crashed...

yes, Qipao often appears in Chinese wedding. Beautiful girl in qipao must look more attractive . i wonder if your PLA hat is the chinese red army hat in green and with a red star on the front? a little surprised you wore it and hard to imagine how was that? it's a pity pictures have lost.
PLA hat is seldom seen in the street but in movies /TV series. some rock bands members like PLA hats.

Yeah it's the old Green one with the Red Star from when Mao was in charge. I wear it a lot actually, just don't wear my jacket so much.

I love these pictures, Lovebeside. Qipaos are elegant, feminine and sexy as well. Imho, much more so than what American celebrities wear nowadays. I find their sexuality too blatant and their tattoos look silly. They look like walking billboards! What do you think?

Wow, never saw a woman with "tattoo" wearing Qipao!! May I say that it would be disgusting! I know I am a litte impolite, but really do not like tattoos.

yeah, this actress is very famous in China, you could track the link Cailiping posted. Well, Wong Kar-Wai who is the diretor of this moive is my favorite director. I feel like most of his movies.

Besides the obvious top-to-bottom plastic surgery and the Photoshop, there's something truly pathetic about a woman of 51 wanting to look like this. Then the pose of the legs strikes me as most vulgar. Madonna, another woman i find , likes to have those vulgar poses as well. Do women nowadays have to look as if they're in the dominatrix business ???

A qipao leaves a great deal to the imagination. If i were a man, i'd prefer that.

So to kinda de-rail this thread, but put it back on track, what about guys with tat's?


Qingpao are too gorgeous, I can't wait to head to China....They'll probably become out of style by the time I get there though, haha.

Perhaps I do not know the west culture of tattoos, but when I saw a Chinese who had a tattoo on his/her arm, leg or anywhere of the body, I loathed to see the ugly pictures and dirty colour. Imo, Qipao reflects gentle virtuous, ancient and charming, attractively clear and beautiful disposition of ladies. It should be pure enough. Well, it is just my feeling of it. So, just dislike a woman with a tattoo wearing Qipao, or a bad mannered woman wearing Qipao.
Actually few women would like to wear high-heeled shoes, it is truth, the reason that they always wear different stylish high-heeled shoes is these kinds of shoes make them look tall and beautiful. But also few women admit it.

Actually I can’t tell which kind of pose is bad or good, but also dislike those poses you mentioned. Do many westerners think they are hot and sexy?
