I was told it was from WWII or something when the Japanese were basically controlling an area around Korea and parts of northern China and they wanted the Koreans to control the Chinese but they didn't really trust the Koreans so they only gave them sticks to beat the Chinese instead of guns to shoot them... But I am not sure if that's right. I've also heard that it's to do with the Ginseng but I'm pretty sure that's a fabrication that people have made to make it sound nicer. And yes, it's offensive to Koreans. Re: Why do Chinese call Korean « 韩国棒子 » ?

In northern China, the 棒子(棒槌) means idiot. Generally, the Chinian people think Korean are from a remote obscure place, know nothing about civilization and the temper is too bad, just call them 棒槌. It is for sure offensiver word, although I don't agree with it.
It's a kind like that the white call blacks negro. Re: Why do Chinese call Korean « 韩国棒子 » ?

what?chiense people think corean don't know civilization?I think it should be chinese now,not corean, anyway, corean is better and more civilized than chinese a little bit.
I would say chinese call korean 棒子(club)is more similar with foreinger call chinese chink or chinaman than white call black negro. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/09/2009 04:03AM by Kurt. Re: Why do Chinese call Korean « 韩国棒子 » ?

Uberche said what is right. Re: Why do Chinese call Korean « 韩国棒子 » ?

韩国棒子 similar to chink or negro is considered disrespectful. I met a few Korean friends when I was at uni. From my experience they're polite and friendly people and therefore civilised just like everyone else.
Statement "I think it should be chinese now,not corean, anyway, corean is better and more civilized than chinese a little bit. " is a little confrontational. And corean should be spelt as Korean. Every place has well-educated gentlemen and under-educated jerks. If you followed mass media to conclude Korean is more civilised than Chinese you're a victim of the media and I feel sorry for you. But I am pretty sure you dont mean this do you? Re: Why do Chinese call Korean « 韩国棒子 » ?

Actually most Coreans spell it with a C, though I usually use a K as it's the Western way... Re: Why do Chinese call Korean « 韩国棒子 » ?

I heard Japanese ask people in some South Korea to maintain the rule when the Japanese invasion of China ,these people frequently uses Laundry Bar to beat the Chinese, afterward people called the South Korean “韩国棒子”.
