Copper Confiscation?

With a friend today I was discussing the silver that is going on sale in China.

Video here

Silver is real money, sometimes called "hard" money and it is under valued. Every one should have some, IMHO. And gold too, of course.

Anyway, my friend mentioned that a long time ago in China the government was telling people to buy and to hold copper (铜). The problem was that later the Chinese government asked to have it, all of it. Even copper doorknobs.

Does anyone know about this? When it might have happened? Thanks in advance.
