I am trying to translate "Young Wesley" from Ni Kuang at the moment. I am not too sure about my chinese reading abilities, so would sombody be willing to check what I have at the moment and maybe make corrections? that would be great!
"Young Wesley," the very lofty origin. The Publisher of“Ni Zhen Youth Magazine” asked me to write the story of Wesley’s youth.
It was an idea that he wanted out. I turned it down several times to no avail. When I actually started the writing, the story practically wrote itself.
Thus, there it is "Young Wesley."
Young Wesley, already very Wesley-like!
2nd August 1991, Hong Kong
I have a small rattan case which I use as my school bag. At that time, almost every secondary school student had one. Later, when there were more female students, male students tried to express their chic and complained that a suitcase is somewhat sissy, so they abandoned them.
I have always retained this small rattan case, even though it is not useful for other people, for me it has a sense of things, each one can cause a memory, and a story.
On that day, I opened my small rattan case again and found a small piece of paper. I unfolded it and something was written on it in western letters: Katsutoxin. There was something next to it, which seemed like a signature: “V”.
This small piece of paper evoked distant memories.
I, Wesley, was well-known in our class. Maybe even in the whole school, but this may make you think, I exaggerate. At all times, in all the places Middle School is the same. Lower class students want to be with the old class students, even want a tiny bit of fame. It is not easy in such a prominent place. At that time, although I was one of the low level students, I already attracted attention.
On that day, I saw the whole drama evolving in front of me, right after I entered the classroom.
First there was a burst of laughter. A student of big stature was grasping a palmsized toad between twigs. It was ash gray and covered with big lumps on his skin, very ugly. This kind of toad is poisenous, the venom can cause the skin to get red and swollen. If you get it in your eyes, you can go blind.
This big classmate’s nickname was “Chunk”. Chunk was not only very strong; his family was also wealthy and has a lot of power. He was the richest person at this school. Chunk is a bully, his behaviour is absolutely hateful. If a crowd is gathering around him, it spells trouble.
With me as well as several of my good friends, overtly or covertly, he has also had many confrontations, without a word to each other.
As soon as I saw him pinching the toad, I knew that he certainly wanted to make fun of others.
He saw me coming in and stared at me challenging. Moving towards a schooldesk in the front row, he searched through it and put his hand on top of a rattan case.
As soon as I saw this situation, I was unable to restrain my rage: this school desk belong to a female schoolmate, her name was Zhù Xiāngxiāng. She is a thin and quite but extremely clever girl, who never stirs up trouble. She is extremely lovable.
And now this “Chunk” wants to stick that poisonous toad into her case!
I took a step forward, shouting: “STOP!”
Chunk looked as if he had anticipated my intervention, therefore is movement was also even more exaggerated, holding the toad high. Along with some of his people, he laughed with a whooping sound. I wanted to make my next move when suddenly I felt someone pulling at my clothes.
I turned around and saw Zhù Xiāngxiāng. Although her face is thin, she has a pair of very beautiful eyes. When I came into contact with them, I understood the meaning of “A look says more than a thousand words", nevertheless she told me in her own voice: “Leave him, don’t get in his way.”
In her eyes she had a force I couldn’t resist. At this moment, Chunk had already opened the rattan case. In the blink of an eye, everyone fell silent as Chunk began shivering, ineffably surprised – everyone looked at the open case. There was an enormous scorpion, hiding at first, suddenly revealing himself. That scorpion surely had a size of 7 to 8 inch, was all black and yellow. Although just a small creature, it is quite impressive, looking like a fierce tiger. And suddenly it also jumped up like one. Arching his tail, he looked very frightening.
Chunk finally reacted, giving out a little scream in fear, his body falling back, knocking down a few people and a desk, letting go of the toad. The toad falling down to the cases, the Scorpion stabbing at it quickly with its tail hook. The toad jumps furiously but before it is able to land, it is dead. With a “Thud”, he lands, lying on his back. His usually ash grey belly turned into a terrible purple.
It was very quite in the classroom. I looked for Zhù Xiāngxiāng. I was walking over to her desk. Before arriving at the school desk, she stretched out her hand unexpectedly.
