The abbreviation of shanghai is “沪” , whose pinyin is “hu”. In jin dynasty(265—420 AD), according to the floods the fisherman of this area made a new fishing tool called “扈”, its abbreviation is “户”。This character means bamboo’s trap for fish, the fishermen insert it into the river when the tide came, and when the water receded, the fish would stay in this tool. That’s why the downstream of Huangpu river is called“扈渎”or“沪渎”. (places where river goes into the sea is called “渎”). This kind of fishing tool must be very important in their life and shanghai’s name was “沪”.
