You can have part time jobs while studying. I've seen many students become part time English teachers. Some of them giving out Guitar lessons too.

In shanghai, For school fees for language programs are usually around 8-10k RMB a semester. Other living costs are hard to tell because it becomes the quesiton of what kind of living standards you want to live by. You can rent a place for only 1000 rmb/month and eat 3 RMB meals every day. Or rent a luxruy condo for 40000 RMB/month and eat glorious food for 1000RMB per meal! Nightlife can also the same diverse price range, you can go to a bar/club and pay 25 rmb per bottle and end up spending and the end of the night 100 rmb for 4 bottles. Or open a table and order expensive liquer bottles that might end up with a bill of 6000 rmb!

I heard that studies and living in smaller cities are much cheaper than in big ones, like Beijing or Shanghai. Is that right?

Hi Marlenemarl!
I'm a college boy in SongJiang university town of Shanghai. Usually I cost around 1000RMB a month, which is almost the same as the average.
But this doesn't include the rent since we pay that once a semester.
So I think 1500RMB would be the sum of money you need to live in Shanghai.

That's right, living in Shanghai and Beijing is much more expensive indeed!

Hello,

One of the cheapest university and city in China is Binzhou. The tuition fees are 2 or 3 times less than in Shanghai or Beijing and the living cost is 3 or 4 times less.
You can find all the information you need at [www.studinchina.net]

In Xiamen University (per semester):

- tuition fee: 8000RMB
- enrolment fee: 400RMB
- dorm rents: about 30 yuan per day, about 3600-4000RMB per semester
- meal expense: about 15-20 RMB per day for three meals a day in the school cafeterias, about 2000RMB- 3000RMB
- textbook fees: about 300 RMB
- insurance premium: 600RMB
- Total necessary expense: about 16000 RMB

There might be some other expenses, but they will not be much.
