Does that 6000 rmb also have to rent you a house? Houses in the big cities are incredibly expensive.

6000 may be enough as long as you are not wanting to go out partying a lot. But I have friends in Shanghai who would have problems on 6000 a month because they love to go to clubs and they are also very expensive in Shanghai.

Not all clubs are that expensive. You can go to places with 100rmb all you can drink. So that's about 400rmb a month on clubbing.

You can rent those 10 storey apartment with no elevators for like 2000rmb or less. Get a room mate and that will only be 1000rmb/month or less!

Eat cheap food for only 6 rmb a meal. 3 meals a day for only 18 rmb! So that's like 540 rmb a month!

Add that all up: 400+1000+540 = 1940 rmb/month! (actually that's not the cheapest)

In Shanghai you can choose to live very cheaply or very expensive. From living only at 800rmb/month or 150,000rmb/month! Money won't be a problem in Shanghai! Just depends on your mentality!

I know you CAN live like that but most foreigners wouldn't want to live like that. 6 rmb a meal is pretty basic meals which most foreigners don't really stick to very well so i think it's important to let him know the difference between Enough Chinese style and Enough foreigner style... haha

My Ex-Girlfriend's mom lived on 1000 rmb a month but 1000 rmb a month is not "enough" by my standards smiling smiley

Yes it's enough I think.
I must say that nowadays 2000rmb per month is not enough for renting an apartment with 2 bedrooms, say nothing of one with elevators. Now I live alone in Shanghai and rent a 6-storey apartment containing only one bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom.its plan area is approximatelly 45 sp meters.I think it's ok for me,and only 1300rmb per month is paid for rent.utilities consist of gas,cable,electricity,air-conditioning,washing machine, refrigerator.ADD THEM ALL UP<1600rmb per month.YES,this maybe the cheapest.
It seems that international students are not allowed to rent a house to live alone outside the campus. It's just because of the so-called culture.I am not that clear about that.Maybe different schools have different rules.
If you come Shanghai, maybe I can help you with Chinese Mandarin.GOOD LUCK.

From what I've been told and have seen in Nanjing anyone with money is allowed to rent a house, As for schools, any school so strict with rules like that is not a good school to go to for foreigners. There are many schools who will let Foreign Students do whatever they want.

I think 6000 is enough. I do think that you might want to spend a little more on the apartment and a little less on the foreign food and clubbing. If you eat local food from small places (often the best food around anyway) take public transport, and go easy on the western bars you'll have plenty left over to get a little nicer place. Things like no elevator and bare concrete floors, stinky bathrooms in the summer and freezing cold in the winter get pretty old pretty fast. If your environment is comfortable you will be more able to focus on your studies!

According to what i knew, 6000RMB is about the monthly salary of a white colored employee.
First you need to find a schoole, i don't know how much they will charge foreigner students, but for local students, the college fee is about 10000/year.
